How COMBANTRIN® Works - Mebendazole

Mebendazole is the active ingredient in COMBANTRIN®-1, which works by killing threadworms - in a single dose*. Mebendazole effectively prevents the worm from absorbing the vital glucose it needs to survive. Without being able to absorb glucose, the worm eventually loses its energy and dies. The worm is then passed out of the body in a bowel movement.

Some medicines and medical conditions may interact with Mebendazole1 –so if you or a member of your family is taking medication it is recommended to speak to your physician beforehand. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions or are taking any other medicines, including medicines you buy without a prescription from a pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.

Ask your doctor about using COMBANTRIN®-1 products with Mebendazole if you are pregnant, as this medicine should not be taken during pregnancy without medical advice. Do not give COMBANTRIN®-1 products with Mebendazole to children under 2 years of age.

Take a look at our allergy checklist before using COMBANTRIN® products to see which product is best suited to you and your family.

*Whilst this type of treatment is highly effective at killing the live adult worms inside the body, all human worming products will only treat the adult worms present in the intestine at the time of taking the medication. They will not treat the eggs or immature worms and will not protect you or your children from contracting threadworms if you are exposed to the infection again. So it's advisable to follow-up on symptoms roughly 2-4 weeks after the initial dose, and administer a second dose if you detect any lingering signs of a worm infection. To learn more about the lifecycle of threadworms see our worm treatment page.
